Which Snow Blower Is the Best One For Your Needs?

!±8± Which Snow Blower Is the Best One For Your Needs?

Do you live in an area which has enough snow each year that you constantly have to shovel it from your driveway and walkways? If so you will know what a back breaking and time consuming job it can be using a shovel. You will of course have thought about buying a snow blower or snow thrower as they are properly called. Or you already have a snow thrower but now need to replace it because it is broken, worn out or you perhaps need a larger more powerful one or maybe a smaller easier to handle model. Snow blowers don't actually blow the snow which is why their proper name is "snow thrower". Snow is ejected at speed from the chute or out of the front of the machine either by the speed of the auger or on a two stage machine, by an impeller inside the output chute.

So What Snow Blower are Available to Suite Your Needs?

There are four types of snow blower or thrower which will be of use to most domestic property owners. Starting with the smallest and going up in size, these are as follows:-

Electric snow shovels. Small electric machines similar in size to a shovel with around a 12-inch cutting width and usually of 7 to 9 amps in power Electric snow blowers. Larger electric machines usually with wheels and around 18 inches cutting width of 12 to 15 amps Gas powered single stage snow blowers. Larger than the electric machines and with bigger wheels. Snow is ejected through the chute by speed of the auger blade Gas powered two stage snow blowers. Top end domestic machines, two stage snow blowers cut through the snow the same as other machines, but the snow is then ejected from the chute by an impeller inside the output chute rather than by the speed of the auger

and, for clearing really large areas such a long driveway

Snow blowers and plow attachments. Attachments for garden tractors and even for on-road utility vehicles

What Job is each Type of Snow Blower Best For?
Electric Snow Shovel. An electric powered snow shovel is great for clearing small areas, steps, decks and patios. They are light weight and very easy to move around. They are limited to being able to clear snow up to about 150 feet maximum away from the electrical outlet and no more than about 4 to 6 inches of fresh light snow in one pass Electric Powered Snow Blowers. Electric powered snow blowers tend to be of around 18-inches cutting width and usually have a power rating of between 12 and 15 amps. These electric machines are good for clearing larger areas of snow up to the size of a 3 car driveway and accompanying sidewalks. They tend to be rated to be able to clear up to 10 inches of snow at a time but 4 to 6-inches depth of snow is more realistic. They are limited to being able to clear snow up to about 150 feet maximum from the electrical outlet. Gas Powered Single Stage Snow Blowers. Gas powered single stage snow throwers are usually 21 to 24-inches and are rated to clear around 12-inches of snow at a time but most are happy with removing 6 to 8 inches in one pass. Single stage gas blowers tend to be powered by 4-cycle engines nowadays rather than 2-cycle engines, thus eliminating the need for adding oil to the gas. 4-cycle engines are also quieter than 2-cycle engines and also tend to have more torque which means that they cope better with tougher conditions. Single stage snow throwers tend to require the operator to push them as the wheels aren't driven but saying that, they do drag themselves along by the cutting action of the auger. Gas Powered Two Stage Snow Blowers. These are the top end machines for clearing areas around domestic properties. These blowers are sized from 24 to 33-inch cutting width and are self-propelled with up to 6 forward speeds and reverse. Two stage snow throwers are also able to cope better with wet snow as it is driven from the chute by a secondary impeller and are also able to clear snow of up to 24-inches in-depth. These two stage snow throwers are large in size which means that they aren't as flexible to use as smaller single stage or electric machines and they also need substantial storage space. Larger Snow Blowers - Attachments. Attachments such as snow throwers and snow plows are available for garden tractors and for utility vehicles.

Which Type of Snow Blower is the Best One for Your Property?

This will depend on the amount of snow you normally have and how large the area is that you need to clear. So, the larger the area, the larger, more powerful the snow blower you will need. After all, you don't want to be clearing the snow all day as there are better things you could be doing.

Steps, Decking, Patio, Paths etc. Really the only option for these smaller areas is a normal shovel or an electric powered snow shovel. Small Sized Area - 3 Cars plus Walkways. If you have a small driveway for up to two cars, plus side walks around the house then an electric shovel may do but I suggest an electric powered snow blower of around 18-inches would be more ideal. A driveway of more than two cars and you definitely need an electric snow blower and not an electric shovel. As with an electric lawn mower, the electric cord can be a problem and so care is needed when using the blower not to cut the cord. Medium Sized Area - 2 to 5 Car Driveway plus Walkways. If you can get electricity to the limit of where you need to clear the snow then I suggest an electric powered snow thrower would be ideal as there is no gas required, no starting problems, easier to store than a gas blower, easier to handle and when you want to use it you just get it out, plug it in and off you go. A gas powered single stage machine will do a similar job to an electric one and you will be able to clear snow where there is no access to electricity within 150 feet. I suggest a single stage gas powered machine will be useful for a driveway which will take up to five cars plus walkways. Large Sized Area - Larger Than 5 car Driveway. If you have an area larger than 5 cars or experience regular heavy snow falls then you will need a gas powered two stage blower. Remember also that two stage snow throwers have driven wheels and up to 6 forward speeds plus reverse, and so are easier on your muscles, back and lungs than electric or single stage machines where the auger is what drags you through the snow. Massive Sized Area - Long Driveway, Large Parking Area etc. If you have a very large such as a long driveway or parking for ten plus cars and own a lawn tractor, ATV or compact tractor then attachments are available to enable you to clear the snow from the comfort of the seat of any of these vehicles. Attachments are also available for on road utility vehicles such as a pick up truck but unless your property is miles from the main road then you won't need to consider these.

Sowing Grass Seed Is Not a Difficult Process

!±8± Sowing Grass Seed Is Not a Difficult Process

Many people think that they have to hire an expensive lawn service to come in and sow grass seed for them. Sowing seed is not that complicated and anyone can do it with little or no training. Whether you choose to sow the grass seed by hand or use a spreader that you push around the yard, the actual process is easy. If you have a really large yard you can even get a spreader attachment that hooks on to the back of your lawn mower or ATV.

Any way you look at it, it's not difficult to do the actual planting, but choosing the type of grass you want to sow can be a more complicated process. You need to look at why you are doing it. Are you just trying to fill in some areas where your lawn is thin? Are you filling in areas where your grass has turned brown? Are you overseeding to reduce weeds? Are you starting from scratch and seeding a whole new lawn? These concerns affect the way you plant your grass seed.

Before sowing grass seed, you will want to clean the areas where you are sowing with a good garden rake. The heavy metal tines on a garden rake will help to loosen the soil and remove dead grass or weeds from the area. Then, using a grass seed that is recommended for the area where you live, you can simply spread the grass seed by hand. Hand sowing is fine for small areas. Once you have spread the seed, go back over the area with a rake to gently work the seeds into the soil. This will prevent it from being blown away by wind, washed out by rain, or eaten by birds.

If you are planting over a larger area you may want to use a spreader. You can get spreaders in either a walk-behind model or one that can be towed behind a riding lawn mower. If possible you still want to rake over the area first to remove any debris that may have built up on your lawn. This can include dead grass or weeds, sticks, leaves, anything that is likely to keep the grass seed from reaching the soil. After spreading the seed you should spread a light layer of mulch or compost over the area.

You get the best results when the weather is not extremely hot or cold. Spring time can be a great time for sowing grass seed, and so can fall as long as you don't wait until it is getting too close to winter. You will need to water your grass seed twice a day, unless you are in a naturally rainy part of the year. You should also let the new grass get at least two inches tall before mowing over it. That gives the root system time to establish itself.

Used Snowblowers to Fit Everyone's Budget

!±8± Used Snowblowers to Fit Everyone's Budget

Once again it's that time of year where the snowfall is deep and everyone's rushing to purchase a high quality snow blower but it you're one of those people that find yourself on a tight budget you might want to consider investing your money into used snowblowers. With so many brands available on the market you need to do some research before making that purchase. Used snowblowers can prove to be a good investment if you do your homework.

Snow blowers are available in mainly single stage, two-stage, and tractor or ATV driven blowers. Consider that you have to keep in mind that you should only get snow blowers that would suit the size of your driveway or lawn. If you have a smaller sized yard or driveway then you should go for used single stage blowers, these machines are designed for lightweight work around the house and are best suited to clear snow on flat surfaces and not a lawn.

For people that boast larger properties and yards the best suited choice for you would be two stage snow blowers that are designed with a snow crushing auger on the front that sucks up the ice and then spits it out through the discharge chute with the use of an impeller which can throw the snow at distances of up to 40 feet in some models. A large majority of two stage snow blowers are gas powered because they require more energy to perform heavy duty tasks but unfortunately these make a lot of noise. If you prefer something quieter some brands like Simplicity snowblowers and Snapper have two stage snow blowers available that are electrically powered.

ATV and tractor driven snow blowers are the most robust and powerful of all snow blowers, they are mainly used in the commercial snow blower sector and are also mainly used by farmers, municipalities, and companies that offer a snow clearing service. One of the best features of these atv and tractor snowblowers are that you can modify and customize them to do whatever you require due to their ability to have attachments installed on or taken off as and when you need it.

Aside from the different types of snow throwing machines available you also have to focus on buying only bands that are well recognized and have spare parts available in bulk at your local authorized dealer. Wear and tear is inevitable so invest in those spares like belts, augers, shear pins and impellers to name a few.

One of the first steps in finding good quality used snowblowers is to search at online websites that specialize in selling used outdoor equipment. Websites like Amazon, eBay; Wal-Mart, Gumtree and Craigslist are a good resource to searching for used outdoor snow throwers. Brands to keep an eye out for include Ariens, Toro, Yard Machine, White Outdoor, and MTD snow blowers. Two brands that are produced under the name of MTD are Simplicity snowblowers and Snapper.

These two makes specialize in offering affordable and durable cheap snowblowers that will serve you well. Always do your research and you'll find used snowblowers that may very well last you for years to come.

Accessories For Your Snow Blower

!±8± Accessories For Your Snow Blower

As the popularity of snow blowers has been growing, so has the list of "must-have" accessories. Here are a few of the more popular ones:

Covers. These are a must if you store your snow blower outdoors, and it is also nice to have when storing indoors, to keep off the summers dust and whatnot. The cost for one of these covers runs between and , depending on quality. Floor Mats. Snow and slush that gathers on your machine while using it can make a terrible mess in your garage, so if you store your unit in the garage, this is great thing to place your snow machine on. It can hold a couple quarts of water and costs about for a good quality one. Semi-attached Mitts. These are designed to fasten onto your handle grips with Velcro type fasteners, so they stay with the machine. But they do a great job of keeping your hands warm and the snow from going up your sleeves. They sell for around . Snow Thrower Cabs. I think everyone has experienced snow being blown back in our faces when using our snow machines, and it the wind is blowing hard it can be downright miserable. However, many manufacturers make attachable "cabs" that enclose the operator from the front and sides. The manufacturer's models are a little expensive, running from 0 to 0, but I have seen a universal model for most machines that sells for around . If you need a cab for your garden tractor, they are more expensive. Drift Cutters. If you ever have to attack snowdrifts higher than the opening on your snow thrower, you will come to appreciate the value of Drift Cutters. They mount on the sides of your opening, near the front and cut through the drift ahead of your machine and feed the snow back into the auger. Most manufacturers offer them for their brand of machine, but they are simple devices (a good handyman can build one at home) and you can buy a third-party brand for around . Tire Chains. Larger model snow machines require chains on the drive wheels for traction. There is no sense trying to maneuver a heavy machine around on ice and snow while the drive wheels are spinning and doing little good. These cost between and 0, depending on size of wheel and style of chain. Garden tractors require larger sizes and generally cost more. Wheel Weights. If you use your garden tractor to clear snow, you really should have wheel weights to help with traction. These normally run around 5 to 0 per set of two wheels. In the event you need to handle "serious" snow, you should also have external weights to help hold your machine in place and not ride up on hard packed snow. You will need to buy these, with mounting brackets, from your dealer. Electric Starters. Many manufacturers offer factory installed electric starters on their larger snow blowers. In my opinion this is a must--I just hate yanking on a starter cord, trying to start a reluctant gas engine in zero weather with the wind howling around me. Fortunately, there are aftermarket electric starter kits available in both 120-volt, and 6-volt systems. I wouldn't mess with a 6-volt system in cold weather, but I would definitely add on a 120-volt starter before the snow flies. These add-ons generally cost between and 0 depending on engine model. Make sure you get a complete kit, as some of the cheaper ones are not all-inclusive. Track Kits. These are kits to convert your drive wheels to a powered track (like a tank or bulldozer). Several manufacturers offer track drive models from the factory, but there are also after-market kits. If you are working steep terrain, this is a handy attachment to have. I have been told that the Ariens kit is fairly easy to install for the accomplished do-it-yourselfer. Kits run around 0. Track kits are also available for your ATV when using a snow blower, but now you are getting into some serious retrofitting.

Well, there you have some of the most popular accessories for snow blowers. There are additional features, like heated hand grips, pivoting wheels, one-hand operation, etc., but these are manufacturers features, not after-market accessories. As I run across more items, I will add them to this list.

ATV and UTV workhorse attachments

!±8± ATV and UTV workhorse attachments

I want to write UTV and ATV attachments. There are many uses for the ATV is not as easy to play. I think everyone should start with a useful area is the ATV around the property. I am using my ATV for many years as a workhorse around the farm. I added a snow plow for the first time the front of the machine that has worked well to move the snow and moving dirt and leveling the ground. Then I went around a folding shovel for moving small amounts of dirt. Its more useful thenTractor for a little work. I used the same idea, like the blade of the plow I used the winch to lift the bucket, as more snow blades are removed manually with a configuration Leaver. Monto an arc around the back of the machine to give some weight on my back so I could get some traction and make the car more stable. I also mounted the bucket on the back of the machine with only a pair of parentheses.

A friend of mine has a UTV we got a bucket in front of it and it works great. We usedthat the movement of gravel and stones and around the farm, it works well for its business landscape. One day I decided to renew my garden and I thought, why not an innovator of the rear of the car, which was a great idea. I borrowed an innovator, a friend who has a 5-acre garden, and used the train behind innovative ATV for the weeds between the rows, it worked well for the fund. Since my garden grew, I began to plant trees closer and with a narrow driving areaI found a lawnmower that I am behind the ATV, which draws a good job and can make it easier to close the tractor.

I have a sprayer 50 liters fuel tank on the back of the machine, so I could mow grass and spray at the same time I saved a lot of time with the installation. I have an arm to measure spray for weeds, and its simple anyone could build one. The pump runs on batteries, so you need to be tied directly to your ATV or UTV. A friend of mine is a 200-gallon tank to put his UTV spray for weed controlmower and setup works beautifully. I also found another use for the tank sprayer to spray my trees cherry fruit fly cherry was working fine with a simple set-up boom. I also have a setup for boom spray for peach tree borer very useful.
